The ocelot


What does it look like?

The ocelot is a wild cat that is often called a tiger cat. It has a body length of about 55 to 100 cm long. It has a tail length of about 30 to 45 cm long. It is often bright yellow with black spots and stripes. Or it may have a reddish and gray colored coat with black spots and stripes. The Ocelot’s stomach is often white and has black spots.The Ocelot only lives about 10-13 years in the wild.

Where does it live ?


  It lives in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, swamps and forests, from the southern United States, Mexico, and Central and South America.

What does it eat?


The Ocelot eats a wide selection of food. It goes out at night to hunt for their pray. It is  nocturnal hunters. It eats  mostly mice, wood rats, rabbits, snakes, lizards, birds, young deer, and monkeys.Ocelot is  very adaptable to many surrounding and quite good at being creative when it comes to catching their prey. For example, the Ocelot lives at the floor of the forest however they sometimes climb in the trees to catch some of there pray.

How are ocelots endangered?

The ocelot is endangered by human's hunting them for their fur and the jungle's where they live being cut down.
From 1976 to 1983 more then 24,000 Ocelots were killed for the fur trading business. To make an animal endangered a lot of people have to contribute. Most of the time people cut down forests for farmland which destroys their habitat and the animals will be forced to find a new place...

What can be done to protect ocelots?



There are various agricultural, economical, and even commercial reasons that are  important to protect the endagered species.  We can try to save ocelots

by donating to different organazations set up to help ocelots breed .Saving endangered species is important to our ecosystem.
 Ocelots are put in the Red Book and are protected by the low.People must follow  this low and they  must stop killing ocelots for comersial reasons.
